Design a pleasure-based sexual health workshop series for Black college women
June 2023-October 2023
Problem: Lack of culturally-relevant sexual health education for Black female college students at a Midwest university.
Role: I designed and led a process-based evaluation of a pleasure-based sexual and reproductive health workshop series for Black college women.
Process: With support from university stakeholders, I recruited participants from student organizations specifically for Black female students (i.e., sororities and auxiliary groups). I designed all data collection tools, including a focus group guide and survey. I conducted an online focus group via Zoom and administered online surveys via Qualtrics with ten Black college women to assess their current knowledge, needs, and concerns related to sexual and reproductive health. I analyzed qualitative and quantitative user feedback to generate actionable insights and recommendations for the workshop series' design and content. I designed and collected post-workshop surveys to measure user satisfaction and identify improvements.
Impact: My work resulted in a three-part workshop series titled "The Age of Pleasure Sexual Health Series" focused on pleasure-based sexual and reproductive health for Black college women, reaching at least 50 participants.
Learnings: My research revealed that the participants were not aware of the sexual and reproductive healthcare services available on campus (i.e., STI testing, free condoms, family planning options, etc.) Also, participants are willing to participate in campus-led sexual and reproductive wellness events.
